Man, 84, dies after fire at flat

A 84-year-old man has died in hospital after being pulled from a fire at his home in Greater Manchester.

Two crews attended the blaze which broke out at a flat inside the three-storey building on Summer Bottom in Broad Bottom, Hyde, at 0550 GMT.

The man, who was rescued by neighbours, died in hospital. The fire is not being treated as suspicious.

A fire service spokesman said: "At this time it is believed that a smoke alarm was not fitted at the property."

An investigation into the cause of the fire is focused on the kitchen area, said Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue.
