Attacker stamped on victim's head

A man who is critically ill after being attacked in Manchester had his head stamped on several times, police say.

Officers are treating the attack on the 22-year-old in Royce Road, in Hulme, as attempted murder.

The victim is being treated in Manchester Royal Infirmary following the attack near the Afewee pub in the early hours of Saturday.

Det Insp Sam Pickering, of Greater Manchester Police, said it was a "vicious assault".

"We are conscious that people may not realise just how serious this incident is," Det Insp Pickering said.

"At this stage, we are investigating an attempted murder.

"There was a lot of people leaving the Afewee pub and we are sure there are those who have valuable information that can help us find those responsible."
