Test runs for new Metrolink trams

New M5000 tram
A total of 40 of the trams have been ordered

Passengers are to get their first glimpse of a new tram which is to operate in Greater Manchester.

The new carriages will be travelling on the Bury line and stopping at stations - but they will not be picking up travellers.

Drivers will be familiarising themselves with the new M5000 trams on "dummy runs".

Earlier this week, the city centre tram services resumed after a £22m upgrade of tracks and platforms.

Free travel

Philip Purdy, GMPTE's Metrolink director, said: "The sight of our new tram running on the Bury line will mean we're one step closer to it going into operation and passengers being able to use it.

"In the meantime, we're grateful for people's patience and look forward to being able to invite them to travel on our new tram in the next few months."

A total of 40 of the new yellow and silver trams have been ordered for the existing lines and new services to Oldham and Rochdale, Droylsden, Chorlton and MediaCityUK in Salford.

The Greater Manchester Transport Executive (GMPTE) said it would offer free tram travel to thank people for putting up with the recent disruption.

The free tram travel days across the network are on 14 and 19 November.
