The original choir pushed John Lennon from number one

The St Winifred's School Choir who topped the charts in the 1980s are aiming for a second crack at number one with a new version of their hit.

The group from the Stockport school knocked John Lennon off the top spot in 1980 with their song There's No One Quite Like Grandma.

The singers, now aged in their late 30s and early 40s, are releasing the song to raise funds for the Big Knit.

It aims to raise more than £250,000 for Age Concern and Help the Aged.

The group, which includes a police detective, an human resources consultant and a mortgage advisor will work with a vocal coach on the single.

Woolly hats

The original line-up included actress Sally Lindsay, who played Coronation Street's Shelley Unwin.

The Big Knit charity single will be out in November and is produced by Darran Bennett, who has worked with Fleetwood Mac, Britney Spears and Holly Valance.

The song was written by Gordon Lorenz and was the UK's number one from 27 December 1980 to 3 January 1981.

The Big Knit involves members of the public knitting small woolly hats for Innocent Smoothie bottles, with money donated from each sale.

It has already raised more than £600,000.
