Man strangled girlfriend in Japan

A man from Greater Manchester has been sentenced to 13 years in jail after he was found guilty of murdering his Japanese girlfriend.

Paul Shimmin, 35, from Bolton, strangled Shoko Kawanobe at their apartment in Yokohama, Japan in September 2007.

He was sentenced at Yokohama District Court after a trial. He has been imprisoned in Japan.

The Foreign Office said he had chosen not to appeal against the verdict.
