A teenage boy has died a week after being attacked during a disturbance in Manchester city centre.

Michael Flint, of Glossop, Derbyshire, was found in a critical condition outside the Spar shop in Piccadilly on the evening of Saturday 4 July.

The 18-year-old was taken to the intensive care unit at Salford Royal Hospital but died on Friday.

Det Supt Paul Rumney, of Greater Manchester Police, said his family had been left "distraught".

Witness appeal

"We know there was a fight, which took place in a busy area of the city centre on Saturday night," he added.

"There must have been quite a lot of people in the area at that time of night and I hope someone may hold the answer to what happened to Michael.

"If anyone saw anything I urge them to come forward."

Seven men and one woman were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and violent disorder, but later released on bail.

A post-mortem examination carried out on Mr Flint proved inconclusive.
