Sir Alex Ferguson's former daughter-in-law and step-grandson have been seriously injured in a road accident.

Nadine Ferguson, 30, ex-wife of Sir Alex's son Darren, was airlifted to hospital in Manchester after the crash near her home in Cheshire on Tuesday.

Mrs Ferguson's 10-year-old son was treated at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Liverpool, where he was said to be "very serious, but stable".

His six-year-old sister was treated for minor injuries at Leighton Hospital.

"Their mother was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital where her condition is serious," a Cheshire police spokesman said.

'Private matter'

Mrs Ferguson's black Vauxhall Corsa was in collision with a Ford Fiesta on Trap Street, Lower Withington, Macclesfield, at about 0825 BST.

Mrs Ferguson is separated from Sir Alex's son, Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson, 37.

A spokeswoman for Manchester United said: "This is a private matter for Sir Alex and his family."

On Tuesday evening, Sir Alex watched Manchester United beat Arsenal 3-1 in the semi-final second leg of the Champions League.
