Adam Jama died in hospital
|
A police officer was following a car which killed an off-road motorcyclist, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.
Adam Jama, 18, was hit by a VW Golf which was then driven off on Phoebe Street in Ordsall, on Monday.
The officer was pursuing the vehicle after believing it had been involved in an earlier accident, GMP said.
The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). Two men, aged 18 and 19, have been arrested.
The officer followed the red VW Golf GTI from Trafford Road and was about 200 yards (183m) behind it with other traffic between them, GMP said.
Second arrest
The traffic officer, who has been suspended from driving duties, followed the car down Phoebe Street where he saw Mr Jama had been injured.
The Golf which is believed to have hit Mr Jama did not stop at the scene. He later died in hospital.
Officers arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. A Golf GTI was also recovered in Swinton.
A second man, aged 18, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon and remains in custody for questioning.
'Popular man'
Police believe an Audi which was later abandoned had been travelling in convoy with the Golf.
Det Ch Insp Jon Chadwick, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "It is appalling to think someone is prepared to drive off from the scene of a collision, leaving another person seriously injured.
"We particularly want to hear from anyone who saw the red Golf and the blue Audi together before the collision to get in touch."
Mr Jama's parents Adam Snr and Maxine Switzer, and sister Lauren, 14, said in a statement that he was a "popular, fun loving and loveable young man".
"His family and numerous friends will miss him dearly," they said.
