Pair hurt in restaurant stabbing

Two men have been stabbed at a restaurant in Greater Manchester following an argument.

The men, aged 22 and 23, are critically ill after the attack, which happened at the Akash restaurant in Market Place, Middleton, in the early hours.

Police said the victims were attacked by two men with knives. The four had earlier argued in a nearby pub.

The 22-year-old was stabbed in the stomach and the back of his neck. The 23-year-old was stabbed in the stomach.

'Terrible incident'

The 22-year-old managed to leave the restaurant and walked as far as Long Street before he collapsed, said police.

A third victim, a 21-year-old man, had a slash wound to the cheek, though his injury is not life-threatening.

Police are appealing for witnesses following what they describe as "a terrible incident".

Detective Inspector John Mazzolai said: "Two young men's lives are in danger this Christmas morning following this terrible incident.

"We would like to reassure communities that we are confident of closing in on the offenders, but still need people to come forward with information.

"You can speak to the police in confidence, as we are able to ensure that you remain anonymous and protected."

He added that he was particularly keen to trace a light-coloured small hatchback car that was seen driving away from the restaurant shortly after the attack.

The attackers are described as white men in their early to mid 20s.
