Samaritan Pc seriously assaulted

A 42-year-old off-duty police officer was seriously assaulted when he went to the aid of woman in Greater Manchester.

The man was walking home from work in Bamford, Rochdale, on Saturday morning when he saw the woman arguing with a man, who was part of a group.

As he walked over to see if he could help he was struck in the face with an object by one of the men in the group.

The officer was taken to hospital with a fractured cheek bone, where he remains in a stable condition.

His attacker is described as white, 6ft tall and slim. He was wearing a shirt and trousers and had dark hair.

Anyone who witnessed the attack on Roch Valley Way is asked to contact Greater Manchester Police.
