Manchester is voting on whether or not to introduce congestion charges

A council opposed to the Greater Manchester congestion charge proposals has been cleared to continue its advertising campaign.

Yes campaigners had claimed Stockport Council's "C-charge: Want to pay? Have your say" adverts were one-sided and therefore a misuse of authority funds.

But district auditor Tim Watkinson said he did not consider there to be any unlawful expenditure involved.

His office confirmed there would be no further action on the matter.

The Stockport campaign directs people to look the council's website to see the impact of the government's Transport Innovation Fund (Tif) proposals on the borough.

A 2.8bn package of investment in public transport, from the TIF, is dependent on the introduction of the charge in 2013.

A massive publicity campaign is being waged by both sides of the yes and no debate as the postal referendum is held this month.

In a statement, the council said it would continue the campaign to the last day of the ballot.

Voting packs have been sent out to 1.94 million people in Greater Manchester and residents have until 11 December to cast their vote.

According to the returning officer, 57,636 people in Stockport have voted so far - a turnout of 26.6%.

The result of the referendum will be announced on 12 December.
