Man's body pulled from city river

The body of a man has been pulled from the River Irwell in the centre of Manchester.

Emergency services were called to the river near Blackfriars Street late on Sunday afternoon after passers-by spotted a man struggling in the water.

Firefighters in a boat, together with underwater search teams, found the man's body at about 2300 BST.

The man is white with dark hair and was in his mid-30s, 5ft 7in (1.7m) and of slim to medium build.

He was wearing dark brown shoes and dark-coloured denim jeans.

A blue and white checked shirt was found on the walkway behind Blackfriars NCP car park near to the river where the man was first seen.

An inquiry is under way to find out how he ended up in the water.

Police said his death is being treated as suspicious and are urging anyone with information to contact them.
