Petrol thieves are using stolen number plates to avoid detection

Rising petrol prices are being blamed for an increase in car registration plate thefts in Rochdale.

A total of 73 plates have been stolen in the town in the last 12 months and officers believe they are being used by petrol thieves to avoid detection.

Thieves attach the stolen plates to their own vehicle so they can drive off without paying.

Police are urging motorists to improve security and are offering free help and advice at two car-crime clinics.

One-way screws

Community Support Officers (PCSOs) will be on hand at two venues in Rochdale to fit special one-way screws and security caps to registration plates.

These make it almost impossible to remove the plates and are being installed free of charge.

Insp Michelle Hughes, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "I would urge people to attend the clinics, because having these screws fitted is a simple measure that will reduce the risk of cars being targeted.

"Also, it costs nothing, doesn't damage the car and could save people money in the long term."

Motorists will also be given further advice on vehicle security at the events at B&Q in Rochdale on Wednesday and at Matalan on 8 September.
