Four men have been arrested over an attack which left a 25-year-old man critically ill in hospital.

Martin Brammall suffered serious head injuries in the incident in Hazel Grove, Greater Manchester, in the early hours of Saturday.

Four men, aged 26, 20 and two aged 21, have been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, Greater Manchester Police said.

Earlier this week officers launched an appeal to trace his attackers.

'Fighting hard'

The assault happened on London Road after Mr Brammall, a National Grid engineer, had been on a night out with friends.

He is critically ill in Salford's Hope Hospital. Police released pictures of him in hospital to help in their appeal to find those responsible.

Det Ch Insp Simon Retford said: "At the moment, Martin's family is distraught by what has happened, but luckily Martin is fighting hard."

The four arrested men are due to be questioned by officers.
