A 78-year-old man from Greater Manchester faces an uncertain future after being told he may not get a new guide dog when his current one retires.
Eric Gamsby, from Daubhill, near Bolton, has sciatica and has difficulty moving his legs. He has been told he walks too slowly for a replacement dog.
The widower was assessed by the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
The charity said it was concerned over his capability and potential safety but would reassess him at a later date.
The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association said dog owners were given the opportunity to apply for replacements when their current dogs approached retirement.
Owners were reassessed for their continued suitability with factors such as walking pace, balance and ability to care for the dog taken into account.
The charity said it was currently unable to accept Mr Gamsby for a replacement guide dog but would reconsider his needs nearer the time his dog was due to retire.
