Scrapyard fire closes rail line

A fire at a scrapyard has closed part of a railway line and several roads in Greater Manchester.

Firefighters called to the site on Meek Street in Higginshaw, Royton, on Sunday night found several cars on fire and acetylene cylinders nearby.

A temporary cordon has been put in place which includes the railway line between Oldham Mumps and Shaw.

Police said it was likely to remain closed for the rest of the day, until the cylinders had completely cooled.

A joint investigation between the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and police is under way to establish the cause of the blaze and determine if it was started deliberately.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call police.
