Motorway opens after ice closure

The M56 in Cheshire has reopened fully after sheet ice which had formed on the carriageway forced a section to be closed following a number of accidents.

The M56 between junction 10 at Stretton and junction 11 at Preston Brook was closed in both directions earlier.

Among several accidents caused by the ice were a lorry jack-knifing. The motorway reopened at about midday.

Snow fell overnight in many parts of the north-west of England and more is expected later.
