Boy hit by train 'seriously ill'

A 16-year-old boy is seriously ill in hospital after he was hit by a train in Greater Manchester.

The teenager, from Astley Bridge, Bolton, had been walking by the tracks on Wednesday night when he was struck from behind near Tonge Moor viaduct.

British Transport Police (BTP) and paramedics were called and he was taken by ambulance to Royal Bolton Hospital.

BTP are not treating it as suspicious but are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The train involved was the 19.58 Manchester Victoria to Clitheroe service.
