Changes to breast cancer services
Trafford General Hospital
The hospital's breast screening service was moved in 2005
Breast care services will no longer be managed by staff at a hospital where a radiologist was found to have misread several mammograms in 2005.

A review was carried out after Amjad Husien was found to have wrongly given 28 women the all-clear at Trafford General Hospital in 2005.

The consultant radiologist is currently the subject of a General Medical Council investigation.

The breast screening service is being run by Wythenshawe Hospital.

Of the 28 women wrongly given the all-clear, 18 were told that because the delay in spotting the error was more than three months, their chances of surviving were "significantly" worsened.

One of the women later died.

The decision to move the management of the service permanently follows a report carried out by Professor Mark Baker on behalf of the NHS last year.

He concluded Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust should no longer be a provider of specialist breast care services.

The Board of Trafford Primary Care Trust (PCT) approved recommendations for services to be managed from the Wythenshawe site of University Hospitals of South Manchester.

Sheena Cumiskey, Chief Executive of Trafford PCT, said: "We have consulted widely with local people about future of breast care services over several months.

"The board discussed some of the issues relating particularly to transport.

"With this in mind the clinics offered by the breast care nurses will continue to be provided from the Trafford Hospital site, although the staff will work for UHSM."

She said the trust would work closely with patients to explain the changes.
