Manchester's Albert Square could become the equivalent of New York's Times Square with its own New Year party.
The town hall clock can be used for the countdown
The city council has begun a consultation exercise on holding an official celebration in Manchester on 31 December this year.
Public services, businesses and residents are all being consulted on the idea.
The event is expected to centre around the historic Albert Square with the town hall clock for the countdown.
"Manchester City Council is consulting with public services, businesses and residents to get their views on holding an official New Year celebration event in the city centre," a statement said.
"We'll be looking at a number of important issues around the idea, and talking to public service providers and businesses, and we also want to make sure that the views of Manchester residents are taken into account."
Those who want to give their views can fill out a survey on the city council's website.
