Two quizzed over fatal stabbing

Two men have been arrested over the murder of a man who was stabbed in the neck in central Manchester.

The 25-year-old victim died in Manchester Royal Infirmary after being stabbed at about 1930 GMT on Monday.

The victim had been walking on Canal Street when he was approached by two men, one of whom attacked him.

A 66-year-old man was arrested on Monday night and a 49-year-old man was arrested early on Tuesday. Both have been detained on suspicion of murder.

An investigation is under way into the murder, which took place in the centre of Manchester's gay village.

Police appeal

Detectives say that at this stage it does not appear as if there was a homophobic motive to the attack, but they are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers have now launched a murder inquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident.

"A 66-year-old man was arrested on Monday on suspicion of murder and is currently being interviewed by detectives.

"A 49-year-old man was also arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of murder and is in police custody for questioning."

No further details have been released.
