OAP matador hints at ring return
Frank Evans

A British matador who was forced to retire from bullfighting in Spain following a knee injury has hinted he could still make a comeback - aged 65.

Frank Evans, of Salford, was carried from the ring by fans after his final fight at the Benalmadena, on the Costa del Sol, in 2005.

He was advised to hang up his red cape after knee replacement surgery.

But he is now mulling over several "tempting offers" to return to the ring after regaining his fitness.

Horned trolley

Mr Evans said: "I have never stopped training and I am still fit enough to fight bulls.

"On the inside I have not got any older, it is only on the outside that I have become older."

Before retirement he was the only English bullfighter performing in Spain, where he is known as El Ingles.

He originally learnt his trade using a supermarket trolley - fitted with a pair of horns - in his native Greater Manchester.

Mr Evans, one of the few Britons to have performed in Spain, killed his first bull in 1966 and has also performed in Mexico, Venezuela and France.

He said he decided to become a matador after reading a book by another English matador, Vincent Hitchcock.
