Power boat in museum retirement

Miss Windermere remains the fastest boat on Windermere
A record-breaking power boat has been given a new home at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI).

Miss Windermere VI holds a world speed record for its class - 155mph (249km/h) - and is the fastest boat in history on Windermere in the Lake District.

The hydroplane, developed by a team in Chorley, Lancashire, set the record on her final run on the water in 2003.

The craft was officially retired in a ceremony at the museum, where it will remain on permanent display.

Three records

Nick Forder, transport curator at MOSI, said: "The North West's contribution to speed record breaking, particularly on water, has not received the recognition it deserves.

"With Miss Windermere VI at MOSI, we can at last tell some of those inspirational stories of courage and world achievement."

Miss Windermere was designed to challenge propeller-driven speed records on Windermere.

She achieved a world record of 109mph (175km/h) at the first attempt in 1995, before being refitted with a more powerful engine and achieving 145mph (233km/h) in 1997.

The team achieved the most recent record of 155mph (249km/h) in 2003, before deciding to retire the boat from record attempts.
