A man has died after running in to a lamppost and falling in front of a bus he was trying to catch.

James Riley, 54, was running to get on the bus in Hollinwood in Oldham, Greater Manchester, when he bumped into the post.

He then fell in front of the bus and was hit, suffering fatal injuries.

Greater Manchester Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident, which happened on Saturday afternoon, near the junction with Wickentree Lane.

Mr Riley, known as Jimmy, lived alone in Failsworth and had retired from his job at Littlewoods in Shaw.

In a statement, his brother Robert Riley and sister Margaret Britton said: "Jimmy was particularly fond of his nephews and niece and will be sadly missed by his whole family and his close circle of friends."

Anyone who saw the accident, is asked to contact the road policing unit at Chadderton.
