Police 'will stop trouble-makers'

Greater Manchester Police are warning they will be carrying out airport checks to prevent known football hooligans travelling to Italy.

Manchester United face AC Milan on Wednesday in the second leg of the UEFA cup tie.

Plain clothes and uniformed officers will be stationed at the airport ahead of the game.

Police say they will be enforcing banning orders and working to identify potential new offenders.

All those who are subject to banning orders must report to a police station on the day of the match and surrender their passport.

'Clear message'

Officers say any breaches of these conditions will be treated seriously.

Around 4,500 tickets have been made available to Manchester United fans, all of which have been sold.

Police are urging those people who have not already got tickets not to travel.

Chief superintendent Janette McCormick, match commander for the AC Milan fixture, said: "We are sending out a clear message to people intending to travel to commit violence: don't waste your time."
