Man dies after cherry-picker fall

A 57-year-old man, who fell 30ft (9m) from a hydraulic platform in Manchester city centre, has died in hospital.

Police were called to Albert Square following a report that two men, had fallen from the basket of the cherry-picker on Wednesday evening.

It is believed that two men had been carrying out work on a statue, Greater Manchester Police said.

Both were taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary. The second man, who suffered a head injury, has been discharged.

A post mortem examination is expected to be carried out on the 57-year-old.

A joint investigation has been launched by Greater Manchester Police and the Health and Safety Executive.
