Metrolink tracks to be replaced

Worn-out tram lines on the Metrolink route in parts of Greater Manchester are finally to be replaced.

Some parts of the track between Bury and Altrincham are more than 50 years old, making it noisy for residents and jarring for passengers.

The £102m work, to be carried out by Carillion Construction, is due to start in summer 2007.

The building of three new lines to Oldham and Rochdale, Droylsden and Chorlton is due to start in 2008.

Plans also include putting in eight trams and installing ticket machines during 2009.

A total of £640m has been earmarked to improve and expand the tram network.

David Leather, of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE), said the current track was worn out and needed frequent repairs.

"Journeys on Metrolink will be much smoother and more reliable once it's complete," he said.

Work to replace track on the Bury line will begin next May, to be completed by September. Work on the Altincham line is due to start in July, and finish by the end of August.

Replacement bus services will be offered during these times.
