Lowry's Liverpool images on show

A painting of Liverpool's famous Liver building by LS Lowry is going on display in the city.

The work was bought in 1963 by Vernon's Pools founder Vernon Sangster and sold at auction earlier this year for more than £1m.

Only seen in public once before in 1973, the painting will be the centrepiece for Tate Liverpool's "Lowry in Liverpool" exhibition.

Most of Lowry's work focused on his home ground of Salford and Manchester.

The Sangster family sold the painting in June at Christie's 20th Century British Art Sale in London.

The rediscovered work was estimated to fetch between £300,000 and £500,000, but an anonymous bidder paid £1,072,000 for the work.

The Liver Building will sit alongside Lowry's other rarely seen paintings and drawings of Liverpool, as well as works of other subjects from private collections

The exhibition runs from 14 October 2006 to 9 April 2007.
