Twenty-four people have been arrested in a series of raids aimed at tackling drug-related crime in north Manchester.

About 300 officers raided 25 properties in Beswick and Openshaw, targeting those suspected of dealing drugs such as heroin and crack cocaine.

Greater Manchester Police said 21 men and three woman, all aged between 16 and 43, were arrested on Tuesday.

They are being questioned on suspicion of possessing drugs with intent to supply and firearms offences.

'Crack houses'

Ch Supt Justine Curran said the operation was carried out after police received intelligence about alleged drug-dealing in the area.

Nine cars were seized along with weapons including a gas-powered ball-bearing gun, a crossbow, machete, samurai sword and number of knives.

Officers also seized £5,000 in cash, some body armour and cannabis.

Greater Manchester Police said notices had also been obtained to close down two suspected "crack houses" in Beswick.
