Gallery restoration in the frame
Mairi Venables working on the Death of Seneca
The frames need to be meticulously cleaned
Visitors to a Bolton art gallery will get the chance to see conservators at work on the restoration and repair of two antique picture frames.

The work carried out at Bolton's Museum, Art Gallery and Aquarium will begin this week and be complete in time for the gallery's reopening on 4 March.

The frames surround the Death of Seneca by Luca Giordano and George Whitefield Preaching in Bolton by Thomas Walley.

The Wolfson Foundation and the Pilgrim Trust is funding the work.

Replacement mouldings

It is being supported by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

The other funders are The John Bradshaw Gass Charitable Trust and The Friends of Bolton Museum & Art Gallery.

Bolton Council said the frames had become extremely dirty, but would be meticulously cleaned by fine art technicians.

The frame for the Death of Seneca requires repairs, cleaning and replacement mouldings.

It is the largest frame in the collection, measuring 152 by 207cm.
