Home-made bomb explodes in garage
Bomb disposal person at the scene
A bomb disposal team carried out a controlled explosion
A controlled explosion has been carried out on a house in Greater Manchester after a home-made bomb was uncovered.

An officer heard an explosion in the garage of a house on Brereton Drive in Worsley on Monday night.

A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing explosive material, but police stressed he was not suspected of terrorist activity.

Homes were evacuated on Tuesday morning and a bomb disposal team carried out a controlled explosion.

Police say the initial blast was caused by a "home-made device".

A cordon was placed around the house and three others on the cul-de-sac. A home on nearby Kempnough Hall Road was affected and Walkden Road was closed.

Residents were allowed back into their homes just before 0600 BST.

The man was due to be questioned by officers on Tuesday.
