Two British world cycle champions are urging people in Manchester to get on their bikes.

On Tuesday, Paul Manning and Chris Newton are attending the launch of Manchester Bike Week, which runs from 11 to 19 June.

The aim of the launch, at Albert Square in Manchester, is to encourage people to get on their bikes.

The two sportsmen were gold medallists in this year's World Track Championships in Los Angeles.

They were also team pursuit silver medallists in last year's Olympic Games in Athens.

Joining the sportsmen at the launch will be councillor Neil Swannick, along with representatives from local cycling groups.

One of the day's highlights will be a penny farthing ridden by a cyclist in period costume.

Organised by Manchester City Council in conjunction with the local cycling groups, Manchester Bike Week will include a wide range of accessible activities in local communities, displays and rides for all ages.

Mr Swannick said: "Cycling is fun and a wonderful way of boosting health and fitness as well being a greener alternative to travelling by car."
