Girl killed 'after cricket game'
Lauren Pilkington-Smith
Lauren's body was found in woodland by her grandfather
A teenager murdered 10-year-old Lauren Pilkington-Smith after she had gone out to play cricket near her Greater Manchester home, a court has heard.

Kieron Smith, 18, had been playing with Lauren and another child in a street in Leigh when she was killed on 7 July, Liverpool Crown Court was told.

It is alleged he battered her about the head in woods near her home.

Her semi-naked body was found by her grandfather, Kenneth Pilkington, that evening. Mr Smith denies murder.

Mr Pilkington was searching the woods with a torch when he found her body under a mound of leaves.

A sock had been stuffed into her mouth and twigs had been put up her nose.

There was nothing to suggest sexual interference, the court was told on Tuesday.

Witnesses and a DNA sample pointed to Mr Smith, said David Steer QC, prosecuting, but he added it remained a mystery why he would want to kill her.

The case continues.
