Lighthouse protects canal barges
Building work is well underway on the North West's newest lighthouse, but this beacon will not protect shipping along the coastline.

The 40ft structure has been built inland in Monton, Gtr Manchester, along the side of a canal.

It cost Phil Austin £20,000 to build but he says he is "living a dream".

A rotating light salvaged from a light ship in Cornwall will be fitted and Mr Austin says he hopes it will be fully operational by winter 2005.

"This was an awful piece of land here and I felt it needed something to lift it so I thought a lighthouse might do that," he said.
