Ex-police chief made High Sheriff

The sheriff could be escorting members of the royal family

The former chief constable of Greater Manchester Police, David Wilmot, will be named High Sheriff of Greater Manchester on Wednesday.

In a special ceremony at Wigan Town Hall Mr Wilmot will, according to the police, become the first former chief constable to hold the title.

The High Sheriff's post has a 1,000-year history.

The unpaid post is chiefly ceremonial and involves being the main point of contact for visiting judges.

It will also involve escorting members of the royal family on visits to Greater Manchester and attending other high profile events.

Mr Wilmot will be installed in his new post at the Atrium of Wigan Town Hall on Wednesday.
