Amir Khan says troublemakers reflect badly on Muslims

Boxer Amir Khan is supporting a police campaign to keep the festival of Eid trouble-free in Greater Manchester.

Many Muslims in Manchester will make Wilmslow Road in Rusholme the focal point of Thursday's festivities.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said last year 16 arrests were made, compared to 43 in 2004.

Muslim leaders are working closely with the police to ensure the celebrations are trouble-free. Amir Khan urged youngsters to set a "positive example".

Police said CCTV will be in operation and officers will be monitoring activity from a GMP aircraft.

Olympic silver medallist Khan said: "Eid is a special time for Muslims. Young people should celebrate Eid in the way it's meant to be celebrated, with our family.

Noise monitored

"I am really pleased that members of the young Muslim community are setting a good example, which was reflected in the lack of trouble during Eid Ul Adha in January.

"I would now like to urge people to continue to set this positive example and discourage the small minority of young people who go to Wilmslow Road causing a nuisance and behave irresponsibly."

Khan said bad behaviour "reflected badly" on the Muslim community.

Ch Supt Dave Thomspon, from GMP, said he was proud Rusholme was a focal point for Eid-ul-Fitr, but appealed for good behaviour.

He also urged visitors not to hire expensive cars and said the council would be monitoring noise levels.
