Solicitor abused client's child

A solicitor has been jailed for grooming the 10-year-old daughter of a client before abusing her.

Anthony Bare, 48, of Lumb Lane in Droylsden, Gtr Manchester, bought the girl gifts before attacking her twice.

Judge Andrew Lowcock, at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court, said Bare's claims that the child had encouraged him were "nonsense".

He had denied two counts of indecent assault, but was jailed on Tuesday for three-and-a-half years.

You wormed your way into the affections of this family
Judge Andrew Lowcock

Bare first befriended the girl in 2001 when she was aged 10, after her mother needed legal advice for a compensation claim.

He bought her expensive presents and showered her with attention, encouraging her to call him dad.

When she was 12, Bare attacked the girl in his Honda S2000 sports car during a trip to McDonalds and later in his office.

Judge Lowcock said: "You wormed your way into the affections of this family.

"Your interest in this family was centred not around your client but around your intended victim.

"She was an impressionable 12-year-old girl without a father figure.

'Great shock'

"You were obviously seeking to dazzle her with your expensive car and lifestyle and you set about grooming her."

Referring to claims by Bare the girl encouraged the sexual attention, Judge Lowcock said: "The idea she encouraged you touching her and that she led you on is clearly nonsense."

His defence counsel Suzanne Goddard told how the proceedings had been "a great shock" to her client and that he fully expected to be struck off the solicitors' register.

Bare was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders' Register, and banned from working with children for life.
