A 35-year-old man from Bury has been arrested by police who found him walking along the central reservation near junction five of the M56.
Greater Manchester Police said the man, who was allegedly armed with a brick, was restrained and arrested on Tuesday.
A spokesman said the man was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester, for treatment to injuries he suffered during the struggle.
A police officer who attended the scene suffered a broken elbow.
