Soccer agent Paul Stretford feared he would be killed over his representation of England star Wayne Rooney, a court heard on Thursday.

The jury in the trial of a boxing promoter accused of blackmailing Mr Stretford was shown a video of the agent meeting the three defendants.

John Hyland, 42, and brothers Christopher and Anthony Bacon, 34, and 38, deny demanding money with menaces.

The prosecution said the video was filmed in secret in June 2003.

Rooney earnings

Mr Stretford, who founded the Proactive Agency, was allegedly threatened by the three men when they met in a Cheshire hotel.

The jury was shown the video on Thursday which began with a friendly and civil meeting between Mr Stretford and Dave Lockwood, a business associate of Rooney's former agent Peter McIntosh.

Warrington Crown Court heard Mr Hyland, along with the Bacon brothers tried to force Mr Stretford into signing a contract paying out half Rooney's earnings for the next 10 years.

The film showed Mr Stretford explaining to Mr Lockwood that Proactive's board would sack him if he agreed to the contract.

'Verbal assault'

The jury then saw all three defendants enter with Hyland launching a verbal assault.

"You have shown me no respect. I've given you manners," he is heard shouting. before swearing at and abusing him.

Anthony Bacon was seen hitting the table with his fist while at one stage his brother was seen to lean into Mr Stretford's face and whisper to him.

Mr Stretford is heard saying to Mr Lockwood, who continued to talk calmly to him, "I'm absolutely shaking here now. That's as close as anyone has ever come to saying 'I'm going to take you out.'"

The case continues.
