Roy Keane is charged with public order offences
Footballer Roy Keane has been charged with assault and criminal damage, say police.

The charges are believed to relate to an incident on Hale golf course on 4 September 2004.

The Manchester United captain, from Hale near Altrincham, is due to appear at Trafford Magistrates on Thursday.

He is charged with a public order offence, criminal damage and assault, a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed.

The 33-year-old Irish international went to Stretford Police Station with his solicitor and was charged with the offences on Tuesday.

The captain played in Monday night's victory match with Liverpool in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

A Manchester United spokesman said: "We are not making any comment on the matter. It is going through due process."
