'Appalling' attack on 97-year-old
Evelyn Jackson
Mrs Jackson has been left "confused" after the attack
Detectives have condemned an attack on a 97-year-old woman in her home as "totally appalling".

Evelyn Jackson, who has only one arm, suffered a broken jaw and hip when she was punched to the ground by a man at the door to her flat in Manchester.

The robber stole money and left Mrs Jackson lying on the floor after the break-in last Friday. She was later found by a neighbour.

Mrs Jackson's family say she has been robbed of her independence.

Detective Inspector Frank Robbie of Greater Manchester Police, said: "I went to visit Evelyn in hospital and to see her lying in the bed bruised and in pain was totally appalling.

"I cannot understand how someone could have punched this frail and defenceless woman and then just left her lying on the floor while they stole money from her."

Mrs Jackson is in a "poorly, but stable" condition in hospital.

The person who has done this has literally knocked the stuffing out of her

The raider attacked the pensioner at the flat in Bickerdike Court, in Erneley Close, Longsight, between 1330 GMT and 1415 GMT.

Mr Robbie added: "As well as being extremely elderly and frail, Evelyn only has one arm.

"She lost her left arm in a works accident many years ago so there would have been no way in which she could have defended herself.

"I hope the person who carried out this attack takes a good look at the photographs issued and asks themselves how they would feel if it is was one of their family that had been treated so disgracefully."

'Lost independence'

Mrs Jackson's granddaughter, Diane Monks, said her grandmother has always been "extremely independent and a proud woman".

"Up until five days ago she still acted that way," she said.

"The person who has done this has literally knocked the stuffing out of her. She is now very confused and her independence has been taken away from her."

Witnesses or anyone who has information about the attack should contact Longsight CID or ring Crimestoppers.
