Baby Peter died from repeated abuse, despite 60 visits from authorities

Two social workers involved in the Baby Peter case are to be charged with misconduct, it has been revealed. The General Social Care Council (GSCC) said Maria Ward and Gillian Christou, both sacked by Haringey Council, will face a disciplinary hearing on 24 May. Last month a GSCC panel lifted interim suspension orders banning them practising social work for 17 months. Peter Connelly, of Haringey, north London, died of abuse in 2008, despite being seen by social services. The 17-month-old had been seen by social workers 60 times before he was found dead with more than 50 injuries. His mother Tracey Connelly, 28, and her partner Steven Barker have been sentenced to minimum jail terms of five and 12 years over the death. Protection plan 'failure' Barker's brother Jason Owen was jailed for three years. Ms Christou now faces allegations of failure to keep records of supervision meetings up to date and failure to document evidence for a risk management plan. She is also accused of failure to ensure a child protection plan was followed. Ms Ward is also accused of failure to follow a child protection plan and failure to keep records of visits up to date. The women are not obliged to attend the professional hearings. After their sacking last year both received interim 17-month suspension orders banning them from practising social work. Those orders were lifted last month.
