Elderly woman dies in fire at care home in Croydon

A woman in her eighties has died in a fire that broke out in a care home in south London.

The victim was found by firefighters at the property on Canning Road in Addiscombe, Croydon, on Monday night. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

About 34 residents were evacuated from the address. Half of a ground floor flat and a communal hallway were badly damaged, London Fire Brigade said.

Metropolitan Police said the fire was "not believed to be suspicious".

The victim has not yet been identified by police.

Fire inquiry

About 20 firefighters and four fire engines attended the incident.

A statement from London Fire brigade said: "Half of a ground floor flat was damaged by fire. A communal hallway on the ground floor was also badly damaged in the blaze.

"An older woman was found by firefighters and pronounced dead at the scene. Around 34 residents were led to safety by fire crews.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."
