A baby boy seriously injured by a falling lamppost in a west London street has died.

Police found the boy and a 62-year-old woman outside Chiswick Town Hall on Tuesday, near the junction of Sutton Court Road and Heathfield Terrace.

The boy, aged about one, was taken to hospital by air ambulance and died there at about 0530 GMT. Police have not yet identified him.

Scotland Yard said the injured woman was not related to the baby.

A carer, who was looking after the infant at the time, was not hurt.

Works carried out

The injured woman was taken by ambulance to New Charing Cross Hospital and was discharged on Wednesday.

Officers from Hounslow CID and the Specialist Crime Directorate were working together with the Health and Safety Executive on the investigation.

On Tuesday, Hounslow Council issued a statement saying work was being carried out in the area as part of the Turnham Green "traffic and transport improvement scheme".

A spokeswoman said the council had been working with a number of contractors carrying out the roadworks in the area.

'Heartbreaking news'

She said no contractors were at the site at the time of the incident.

"The council is co-operating fully with the police and Health and Safety Executive investigations," she said.

The flag at Hounslow Council's Civic Centre in Lampton Road, Hounslow, was flown at half-mast.

The council also opened a book of condolences at Chiswick Town Hall, which is close to the scene of the incident.

The Mayor of Hounslow, Paul Lynch, said: "This is heartbreaking news and all our thoughts are with the family at this terrible time."

Council leader Peter Thompson, who represents the Turnham Green ward, said: "On behalf of my fellow ward councillors, Adrian Lee and Samantha Davies, I want to express our deep sorrow and sympathies regarding this tragedy in our local community."

A post-mortem examination is due to be held later.
