Islington pupils meet US First Lady Michelle Obama

The school children met with Michelle Obama

A group of London schoolchildren have met the US First Lady Michelle Obama during a trip to the White House.

The 10 pupils, of Islington, north London, are touring Washington, funded by a £13,700 grant from the American Embassy in London.

They were selected after winning a Black History Month competition. One pupil was selected from each of the 10 comprehensive schools across Islington.

The competition focused on 20th Century immigration from the West Indies.

It is the second time Mrs Obama, wife of US president Barack Obama, has met Islington schoolchildren.

In April 2009 she visited Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School in the borough and was left close to tears as she addressed the excited crowd.

She told them then: "We are counting on every single one of you to be the best that you can be."
