'Bleach' death boy's mother accused of murder

A mother has been charged with the murder of her 12-year-old autistic son who died after drinking a liquid thought to be bleach.

The 44-year-old was arrested after emergency crews found the boy with fatal injuries at the family home in Barking, east London, on Tuesday night.

Barking and Dagenham Council has begun a serious case review into the boy's death.

The woman is due to appear at Barking Magistrates' Court on Friday.

A post-mortem examination gave a preliminary cause of death as ingestion of a "caustic liquid".

Forensic tests

The council said police, social workers and health authorities had been in contact with the family.

The council's investigation will identify if anything could have been done to avert the death.

A statement from the council said: "A number of agencies have had involvement with them over several years, including the police, the NHS, and other local authorities."

The Metropolitan Police's child abuse major investigation team are waiting for the results of further forensic tests.
