Boris Johnson 'furious' at Northern Line closure plan

Tube Lines wants early closures on week days

London Mayor Boris Johnson is said to be "furious" after a firm upgrading the Northern Line said it would need several line closures over 17 months.

Tube Lines wants early closures between Stockwell and Morden from July until November 2011 and 65 weekend closures before the same deadline.

It said these were needed to finish the work on time.

Mr Johnson said the firm had not learnt after being denied extra money when work on the Jubilee Line overran.

Lesson 'not learnt'

Last week an independent adjudicator rejected Tube Lines' claim for a further £327m from Transport for London (TfL) for costs arising from delays to the Jubilee and Northern line upgrades.

The adjudicator ruled that London Underground (LU) had not breached its contract and bore no responsibility for any increase in the costs. The Jubilee Line upgrade was due to finish by December 2009 but is now scheduled to end in October 2010.

The chief executive of the company will face London Assembly's transport committee later over the issue.

Mr Johnson's transport adviser Kulveer Ranger said: "We are angry because this is where we feel the Tube Lines have not really learnt a lot from what's been a debacle in terms of delivering the Jubilee Line update, for which they are also responsible."

Early closures

He said the mayor wanted Tube Lines to review the programme.

A spokesperson from Tube Lines said: "We requested a mixture of extended engineering hours (EEH) from 11.30pm until start of traffic and 52-hour part line weekend closures.

"The use of EEH is considered the best way of balancing the need to manage your work efficiently whilst minimising inconvenience to passengers.

"We need LU to confirm the full timetable of closures to ensure on time completion of the line upgrade."

Plans to end services on the line by 2330 GMT on weekdays could mean fewer services from 2000 GMT.
