Man dies in hospital after south London flat fire

A 50-year-old man has died after a flat fire in south London.

Fire crews were called to Ely Road in Croydon at 2345 GMT on Saturday to the blaze in a four-bedroom property.

Firefighters using breathing apparatus rescued the man, who was taken to hospital suffering the effects of smoke inhalation but later died.

Police have said that at this early stage the fire is being treated as non-suspicious. His next of kin have been informed.
