Police want to identify two women in Trafalgar Square area at the time

Police have issued CCTV images as part of an inquiry into a homophobic assault in central London that left a man critically ill.

The 62-year-old victim was with a friend when they became involved in an argument with three people, close to Trafalgar Square, on 25 September.

He was then punched and kicked to the ground, outside South Africa House.

The two images released show two women, who were in the area at the time and who police would like to identify.

'Valuable information'

Police were called to the crime scene on Duncannon Street at 2245 BST.

The man was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition with serious head injuries.

His 30-year-old friend suffered minor injuries.

Det Ch Insp Alexis Boon said: "We hope release of these images will help us to identify members of the public who were in the area at the time of the attack and may be able to provide us with valuable information."

"It is vital that anyone who can assist contacts us as soon as possible."
