Insurers have offered a 1m reward for information about the raid

Two people have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery at a central London jewellery store in which goods worth £40m were stolen.

Two men armed with handguns stole 43 pieces from Graff jewellers in New Bond Street on 6 August. It was the biggest jewellery robbery ever in the UK.

A female worker was dragged outside the store by the men, who fired two shots as they made their escape.

A reward of £1m has been put up in an effort to find those responsible.

Discarded evidence

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the two arrests but would say no more for "operational reasons".

Police have been searching for two men who were captured on CCTV carrying out the robbery.

Forensic specialists have been examining two cars and a motorbike used as the offenders made their escape, a discarded handgun and materials used to disguise the two men.

Officers have also searched properties across London and the South East.

Last week a 50-year-old man was arrested in Ilford, east London, in connection with the robbery. He was released on bail pending further inquiries.

HOW GANG MADE OFF WITH 40M OF JEWELLERY
Map showing the robbery and getaway
Earlier in the day, on 6 August, the two robbers spent four hours at a make-up studio in Covent Garden having their appearance changed by an unwitting make-up artist
1. At 16:40 BST two men enter Graff Jewellers on new Bond Street. Once inside they threaten staff with hand guns.
2. They leave with £40m worth of jewellery. They fire a shot to ward off members of the public and get into a waiting BMW
3. The BMW crashes into a taxi on Stafford Street but continues on its journey
4. Another shot is fired in Dover Street as the two men switch to a second vehicle, a silver Mercedes. A powerful motorcycle also appears alongside and something is apparently passed to the rider
5. The car drives into Berkeley Square and then Farm Street where some of the suspects get into a blue VW Sharan MPV
